VA: Interview

I researched in to SADD and found their local kansas chapter which is located out of topeka, KS. I came to find a lady name Maria Torrez Anderson in which was my interviewee. Here are some of the questions that I asked her:
1) What is your position at SADD?
-State Coordinator, in which there are 25 in the country.

2) When was this organization started?
-It was originally started by a hockey team coach in the 1980's, after one of the hockey players was hit and killed in a drunk driving accident. SADD originally stood for Students Against Drunk Driving, but now it means Students Against Destructive Decisions. Originally started in Massachusetts.

3) What types of marketing strategies do you use?
-SADD National Office does almost all of the marketing. They include an online newsletter that is monthly called the SADDvocate. They also hold an annual National conference in which holds interactive workshops and is a way of getting people together to share knowledge of the problem.

4) What is the best way to decrease drunk drivers?
-First off, not lowering the drinking age to 18. Stay at 21.
-Educating the youth at an early age. Factual information and not bias information. The facts!
-Reaching out to the youth is very important because of the developing brain structure of a young child is very vulnerable and still growing until the age of 25.

5) What types of things can graphic designers do to help fight drunk driving?
- She wasn't sure what we can do, so I asked her if their organization hired out designers for ad campaigns and she said they do something through KDOT. Some of the campaigns that they have done before is very graphic images and brutal imagery to get the shock factor. Another thing that she brought up is promoting the law, and how it will affect your future.

6) What types of strategies do you use in making people aware of this problem?
-They hold a Leadership Summit in which 22 teams youth and adults come to the conference. They also have something called an Action Plan, which they focus on underage drinking.

7) What age group is your organization geared towards?
-Highschool students; 9-12 grade
